Chinese (Mandarin) slang

佛系

fó xì

Buddha-like: chill, low-desire, go-with-the-flow.

Literally:
佛 Buddha + 系 type / style

How it's used

Borrowed from Japanese around 2017, 佛系 describes an attitude of not fighting for things — whatever happens, happens (随缘). It's attached to almost anything: 佛系青年 (zen youth), 佛系养生, 佛系追星. Usually playful and self-describing; it's gentler and less political than 躺平.

Examples

  • 我对减肥很佛系,瘦不瘦随缘。

Wǒ duì jiǎnféi hěn fóxì, shòu bú shòu suíyuán.

I'm very zen about dieting — whether I lose weight or not, whatever happens happens.

  • 他是个佛系的人,从来不跟别人争。

Tā shì ge fóxì de rén, cónglái bù gēn biérén zhēng.

He's a laid-back guy who never competes with anyone.
